Golden Surge Scalper is an Expert Advisor for MetaTrader 5 that trades XAUUSD (gold) on an intraday basis. It looks for momentum breakouts on the M5 timeframe and uses the H1 trend as a filter, so entries are only taken in the direction of the larger move. Positions are opened and closed automatically and the Expert Advisor holds one position at a time.
The Expert Advisor does not use a grid, does not use martingale and does not average losing positions. Every position is opened with a stop loss.
Requirements
Symbol: XAUUSD.
Chart timeframe: any period. The Expert Advisor reads M5 and H1 data internally, so it does not have to be attached to a particular chart period.
Account type: both hedging and netting accounts are supported.
Broker: a low gold spread is strongly recommended. The strategy works with small price movements, so a wide spread has a direct effect on the result.
Algorithmic trading must be enabled in the terminal.
A VPS located close to your broker server is recommended for consistent execution.
Point values and broker digits
Several inputs are given in points. Those values assume a broker that quotes gold with three decimal places, for example 4314.587, where one point is 0.001.
If your broker quotes gold with two decimal places, for example 4314.58, where one point is 0.01, divide every point based input by ten.
The default stop loss of 4000 points equals a price distance of 4 USD on a three digit quote. On a two digit quote the same distance is set with a value of 400.
Input parameters
Symbol and basics
InpComment - order comment attached to every trade. It helps identify the Expert Advisor trades in the terminal.
Entry: momentum breakout trigger
InpBreakoutBars - number of closed M5 bars used as the breakout lookback window. A larger value means price has to exceed a wider range, which produces fewer entries.
InpBreakoutBuffer - extra distance in points that price has to move beyond the recent range before a breakout is accepted.
InpVelocityUSD - minimum price movement, in USD of gold price, over the momentum lookback window. Higher values require a stronger move.
InpVelocityBars - length of the momentum lookback window in M5 bars. One bar is about five minutes.
InpTriggerMode - which conditions have to agree before an entry is allowed: breakout and momentum together, breakout only, or momentum only.
Trend and market filters
InpUseH1Trend - enables the H1 trend filter. Entries are only allowed in the direction of the H1 trend.
InpUseM5Trend - enables the M5 moving average alignment filter.
InpMinADX - minimum M5 ADX value required for an entry. Set to 0 to disable this filter.
InpMaxSpreadPoints - maximum spread in points at which an entry is allowed. Set to 0 to disable the check.
InpOnePositionOnly - when enabled, the Expert Advisor will not open a second position while one is already open on the symbol.
Entry cooldown
InpMinIntervalMinutes - minimum time in minutes between two entries. Set to 0 to disable the cooldown.
Exit management
InpStopLossPoints - fixed stop loss distance in points. See the note about broker digits above.
InpTP_ATRmult - take profit distance as a multiple of the M5 ATR value. Set to 0 to disable the fixed take profit and rely on the trailing stop instead.
InpTrailStartUSD - floating profit, in USD of gold price movement, at which the trailing stop becomes active. Set to 0 to disable trailing.
InpTrailDistUSD - distance, in USD of gold price movement, kept between the current price and the trailing stop.
InpStallSeconds - if the position has reached the minimum profit and no new profit extreme appears for this many seconds, the position is closed. Set to 0 to disable this exit.
InpStallMinProfitUSD - minimum floating profit, in USD of gold price movement, required before the stagnation exit can act.
InpStallMaxSeconds - maximum time in seconds that a position may stay open. Set to 0 to disable this limit.
Position size and risk tiers
InpLotMode - how the lot size is calculated: a percentage of the account balance, a fixed risk amount in USD, or a fixed lot size.
InpRiskPercent - risk used by the balance percentage mode.
InpFixedRiskUSD - risk amount used by the fixed risk amount mode.
InpFixedLots - lot size used by the fixed lot size mode.
InpAdaptiveRisk - enables risk tiers that change with the current drawdown.
InpDDRecoverBoost - risk percent used while the account is in recovery mode.
InpDDTrigger - drawdown from the equity peak, in percent, that switches the Expert Advisor into recovery mode.
InpDDDeRiskPct - risk percent used after the account reaches a new equity high.
InpMaxDDHalt - drawdown from the equity peak, in percent, at which the Expert Advisor stops opening new positions.
Recommended starting point
The default values shipped with the Expert Advisor are the settings that were used for the tests shown below. Test them on a demo account first and adjust them to your broker.
