Expanded Cloud is a trend-following overlay indicator that uses an adaptive expansion algorithm to identify market direction with clarity. Dynamic cloud zones expand and contract around price action based on real-time volatility, giving you a visual edge in reading trend strength and catching reversals early.
The indicator includes a built-in information dashboard with two tabs — Signal and Cloud — displaying real-time data about current market conditions directly on your chart.
How It Works
- A rolling highest/lowest calculation over a configurable period forms the base range
- An expansion operation reacts to directional momentum, pushing the opposite boundary outward during strong moves
- When the expansion detaches from the rolling range, a trend change is detected and marked on chart
- Green clouds below price signal bullish expansion, red clouds above signal bearish expansion
- Thicker clouds indicate stronger trend conviction
On-Chart Visuals
- Cloud fills between expansion lines and rolling range, color-coded by direction
- Dotted expansion source line tracking the active trend level in green or red
- Trend change dots appearing at the exact bar where direction shifts
- Expansion boundary lines showing the upper and lower adaptive edges
Signal Dashboard Tab
The Signal tab gives you an instant read on the current market state.
- Signal direction — clearly displays BULLISH or BEARISH with a color-coded BUY or SELL label
- Bull/Bear strength bars — visual proportion of bullish vs bearish pressure
- Cloud Mid — the midpoint between the upper and lower expansion boundaries
- Duration — how many bars the current trend has been active
- Cloud Width — the distance between upper and lower expansion lines, reflecting current volatility
- Expansion Ratio — percentage showing how much the cloud has expanded relative to the channel
- Price vs Cloud Mid — whether price is currently above or below the cloud midpoint, with the exact distance shown
Cloud Dashboard Tab
The Cloud tab provides a detailed breakdown of the expansion envelope and channel structure.
- Cloud Envelope section — displays the Cloud Ceiling (upper expansion), Cloud Floor (lower expansion), Cloud Midpoint, and Cloud Width in one view
- Channel vs Cloud section — shows the Channel High and Channel Low (rolling highest/lowest), the full Channel Width, and the Expansion Ratio comparing cloud size to channel size
- Activity and Settings section — tracks the number of Bull Switches and Bear Switches that have occurred, Total Switches count, and confirms the current Length and Expansion percentage settings
The dashboard displays the current symbol and timeframe in the header, so you always know which instrument the data refers to. Tabs are selectable for quick switching between signal overview and detailed cloud metrics.
Why Traders Use It
- Clean, non-cluttered overlay that reads trend direction at a glance
- Built-in dashboard eliminates the need to calculate cloud values manually
- Signal tab provides instant trade direction with duration and strength context
- Cloud tab lets you monitor expansion behavior and channel structure in real time
- Adaptive to volatility — no static levels that go stale in changing conditions
- Works on all symbols and all timeframes, from M1 scalping to D1 swing trading
- Pairs well with other indicators or price action for confluence-based entries
- Particularly effective for identifying high-probability long setups when combined with your own confirmation
Inputs
- Length (default 20) — Lookback period for the rolling high/low. Higher values smooth the clouds and reduce signal frequency
- Expansion % (default 50) — How aggressively the opposite boundary reacts. Higher values create wider, more visible expansion zones
- Source (default Close) — Price type for calculations: Close, Open, High, Low, Median, Typical, or Weighted
