We make one of those too. You can't get the degrees right with a areometer, you have to distill them. The presence of honey residue increases the density of the solution.
I don't know what an areometer is, what did I measure wine with? I don't remember, but you can measure the degree in mead with one of these.
In general, it's the taste that determines the degree.)
An aerometer is a glass float with a scale and pellets inside and measures the density of a liquid. A variation is the spirit meter, with a scale made to measure percent (or degrees) of alcohol.
In mead, the spirit meter will not correctly indicate the percentage of alcohol, because in addition to alcohol and water in the solution there are many different substances, those that have not yet completely reacted and those that have formed during the reaction,
