Homeland Security Spends $430 Million on Radios, No One Knows How to Use Them

It's a sign of how efficient our government is. The Department of Homeland Security has invested about $430 million into making sure federal agencies are able to communicate with wach other during emergency situation. They're doing this with special radios tuned to a secure common channel.

But heres the bad news, almost no one in the Department knows how to use it, or even that it exists.

72% didn't know the channel existed

25% knew it existed but couldn't find it

3% could find an older channel, but not the new one

Only one of 479 DHS employees surveyed was able to use the channel

A DHS official gracefully acknowledges “some challenges in achieving department-wide interoperable communications goals.” That may be an understatement. A .208% success rate isn't all that great.
