The Chartists Fallacy
Many say, Just look at the charts of a stock or commodity; the chart tells all. I think not; the chart is a reflection of what has happened; it shows the current trend. But the trend is brought about by an actual condition the fundamentals of the market place.
The good news is that we can ascertain those fundamentals that most consistently cause certain market action to appear on the charts.
It is wrong headed to think a chart can tell you what will happen in the future. If that were the case, there would be a plethora of wealthy chartists, and there are not. Heres why; a chart is like the waves trailing off a ship at sea. The waves or charts show where price has been not where it is going. Only the captain of the ship knows the direction. Yes, its true the waves may help reveal where the ship is headed. But, and heres the rub, the captain can turn on a dime in an instant and the waves wont reflect the sudden turn in trend for some time.
Shouldnt we then pay attention to the captain more than the waves he makes?
The captain causes things to happen. In my world, things happen for reasons there is a captain of the ship. Stocks go up because a company gets more profitable. Commodities go up because of more demand; go down when there is more supply than demand. These, then, are the critical components we need to address and study for our speculation. In short, fundamental conditions are the captain Ahab speculators must pay attention to. Salute him, not the waves.
To this end, a trader can study, look at the following elements, fundamental to future activity:
1. WHAT THE COMMERCIAL INTERESTS ARE DOING
This means following the big boys, the users and producers, the informed money.

2. MARKET SENTIMENT
Price Action
The public is mostly wrong most of the time.
3. SEASONAL INFLUENCES
Certain things happen at certain times; there are strong seasonal influences to corporate profits as well as planting and harvesting influences.
There are other factors; I am only touching on the surface here. The point is once we get a handle on the underlying conditions, then we can turn our attention to price action.
