ORB (Opening Range Breakout) is an Expert Advisor for MetaTrader 5 that trades one of the most studied intraday patterns: the breakout of the opening range.
Its logic is straightforward. It identifies the market's initial balance during the first minutes of the session and trades only when price shows real intent to continue in one direction, avoiding early entries and limiting activity to a single opportunity per session.
It is designed with high-liquidity, high-volatility indices in mind, such as NASDAQ100, and its whole logic is configurable to adapt to other instruments and sessions.
BASED ON A DOCUMENTED BEHAVIOR
The Opening Range Breakout is one of the most analyzed intraday strategies in the quantitative literature. ORB includes two approaches: the classic breakout of the opening range to either side, and an entry following the direction of the session's first candle. The system turns that behavior into objective rules, with no subjective interpretation.
SIMPLE AND OBJECTIVE ENTRIES
Each session begins by automatically defining the market's initial range. From that point, the Expert Advisor waits for the breakout confirmation before executing a trade. The whole logic is based on mechanical rules, which produces consistent, easy-to-verify behavior.
By default it opens a single trade per session, with no re-entries, and an automatic close at the end of the day. This is a conservative approach, designed to keep risk contained and avoid overtrading.
TWO CONFIGURABLE ENTRY MODES
- Classic breakout: enters when price breaks the opening-range extreme to either side.
- First-candle direction: filters the trade based on the sign of the session's first candle.
You choose the approach that best fits your way of trading.
RISK MANAGEMENT
ORB includes a set of money-management tools to suit different trader profiles:
- Stop Loss at the opening-range extreme.
- Volatility-based Stop Loss (ATR).
- Structural Stop Loss using fractals.
- Position sizing by fixed lot or by risk percentage (on balance or on a fixed base capital).
- Per-trade risk limit, which blocks any entry whose real risk exceeds your tolerance.
- Maximum leverage control.
- Automatic Break-Even and optional Trailing Stop.
- Several Take Profit modes (R multiple, range multiple, or close at the end of the session).
- Optional spread, trend-regime and volatility filters.
- Automatic close at the end of the session.
Each trade knows the risk taken before entering the market.
ADAPTATION TO DIFFERENT MARKETS
Although the system is designed for indices such as NASDAQ100, its whole logic is configurable. The opening-range duration, the filters, the Stop Loss type, the targets and the schedule can be adjusted to different instruments and sessions, always respecting the original logic of the Opening Range Breakout.
TRANSPARENCY
All decisions are calculated exclusively on information already available at each moment (closed candles). This means the Expert Advisor does not repaint signals and does not use look-ahead bias. Since it works only with confirmed information, the signals in testing and in live trading start from the same basis.
VALIDATION PROCESS
The NASDAQ100 configuration was developed through in-sample selection, out-of-sample confirmation, and a forward test on an unseen period. The goal is robustness, not an overfitted backtest.
REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
- Platform: MetaTrader 5.
- Recommended symbol: NASDAQ100 (US Tech 100).
- Important: session times are defined in SERVER time. Adjust the opening-range start hour to your broker's offset so it matches the market open (for example, 9:30 ET). An incorrect time setting is the most common reason for the system not to trade.
- Account type: hedging.
- Broker with tight spread on indices and stable execution.
- A VPS is recommended for continuous operation.
- Always test on a demo account before going live, adjusting the risk to your capital.
RULE-BASED DESIGN
ORB does not try to predict the market. It waits for price to reveal its intent after the open and executes the strategy following objective, repeatable, automated rules. Its strength lies in execution discipline and in taking advantage of a known statistical market behavior.

A FAMILY OF THREE STRATEGIES
ORB is part of a family of three Expert Advisors that exploit different market behaviors and can be combined:
- VBS (Volatility Breakout System): trades the expansion that follows a phase of volatility compression.
- TPS (Trend Pullback System): waits for a quality pullback within a trend and enters on the resumption.
- ORB (Opening Range Breakout): takes advantage of the breakout of the session's opening range.
Each strategy works independently and is offered separately. When traded together they tend to complement each other, since when the context does not favor one it often favors another.
