Profit Factor is profitability, the ratio of total profit to total loss. One means that the sum of profits equals the sum of losses.

If there is no loss, i.e. the sum of losses is zero, then the denominator is zero, in which case Profit Factor = ΣP / 0 = ∞

This points to incorrectness of the profitability definition formula itself, because it does not satisfy the boundary conditions. Obviously, profitability (P) should vary from 0 to 1 or from 0 to 100%. Therefore, the formula should look like this:

P = P/(P+U)

or

N = N/(N+U)*100%

Here: P and Y are total profit and total loss, respectively. Now, no conflicts arise.

Losses:

Y = Y/(P+Y)

or

Y = Y/(N+U)*100%

Now, the normalisation condition is also always satisfied:

P+Y =1 or 100%.

N+U = N/(N+U) + Y/(N+U) = (N+U)/(N+U) = 1
