The 1% Rule on Gold: What Position Sizing Actually Looks Like at $10 a Tick
Most new gold traders risk 5% or more per trade because gold "moves fast and the setups are rare." In my experience, that logic is backwards: gold moves fast, so the position should be small.
The 1% rule is simple: never risk more than 1% of your account on a single trade. On a $1,000 account, that means a $10 maximum loss per trade.
Here is what that looks like on XAUUSD. One standard lot moves roughly $100 per $1 of gold price. If your stop sits $3 away from your entry (a normal distance for M15 structure), one standard lot risks $300. That is 30% of a $1,000 account, not 1%. To risk $10 with a $3 stop, the correct size is 0.03 lots.
Do this math before every entry:
1. Account risk in dollars = balance x 0.01.
2. Stop distance in dollars = entry minus stop.
3. Lot size = risk divided by (stop distance x 100).
Three straight losses at 1% still leave your account intact. Three straight losses at 10% and you are rebuilding your psychology from scratch. Entry timing is half guesswork; position size is the one part of trading you control completely. Make it your edge.

Gold Reads the Dollar First: Why I Check DXY Before Every XAUUSD Trade
The first thing I open before touching XAUUSD is not the gold chart — it is DXY, the Dollar Index. Gold is priced in dollars, so when the dollar strengthens, gold usually has to work harder to rise, and vice versa. That inverse relationship is a fact, but it is not a rule you can trade blindly.
What DXY gives me is context, not entries. If DXY is pressing into a major weekly resistance zone and stalling, I know any dollar weakness could lift gold — so I become more selective about gold short ideas that session. If DXY is trending hard in one direction, I avoid fighting it: buying gold into a surging dollar is paying for the privilege of being wrong.
There are times the correlation breaks entirely. In risk-off panics, both gold and the dollar can rise together as money runs to safety. Around FOMC and CPI releases, rate expectations can whip both instruments in the same direction. When I see gold and DXY moving together for more than a session, I stand aside — a broken correlation means my context is gone.
So the habit is simple: check DXY's direction, its distance from weekly support/resistance, and whether it is agreeing or disagreeing with gold's move — then plan the gold trade with that context in mind, never as the entry itself.

Gold's Hidden Tax: Spread and Slippage
Every gold trader pays a tax they never signed up for: the spread.
On XAUUSD, a calm-hours spread on a decent retail broker is around 20–40 cents per ounce. Sounds tiny — until your target is 3–4 dollars away. Then you are giving up roughly a tenth of the move before the trade even breathes.
Three rules that saved my account more than any indicator:
1. Size your targets to the spread. Keep take-profit at least 5–10 times the spread you actually see at entry, not the broker's marketing number. If your TP is only 3–4× spread, half your "winners" are really break-even trades the spread ate.
2. Know when the spread widens. It blows out at daily rollover and in the minutes around high-impact news. A 40-cent spread can print at 1.50 dollars or worse during a CPI candle. Entering a scalp there means you need the move twice: once to cover the spread, once to make money.
3. Slippage is the spread's cousin. Stops do not always fill at the exact price, especially on fast bars. Size every position so that a bad fill costs you roughly what you planned — never widen a stop mid-trade to pretend the math still works.
One habit: note the spread at entry in your journal next to the entry price. The first time you see how many of your "break-even" trades were actually spread-paid losses, you will start treating this like a real cost — because it is.
