ABOUT THE DEVELOPER
I'm a software developer with over 20 years of experience. For the past 5 years I've focused specifically on options trading and stock markets, combining both worlds to build automated systems grounded in real statistics, not promises. MeridianEdge is the result of that work: nine iterations of trial and error before finding one that survives a forward test on data it never saw during calibration.
WHAT MERIDIANEDGE IS
MeridianEdge is a mean-reversion Expert Advisor (EA) for GBPUSD on the H1 timeframe. It doesn't try to predict news or follow trends: it identifies statistically extreme moments in price (measured via z-score) and bets that, within the right time window, price reverts back toward its recent mean.
HOW IT WORKS — THE MECHANISM IN DETAIL
1. Statistical detection (z-score): the EA calculates the moving average and standard deviation of closing price over an N-period window (default 20). When price moves more than 2.5 standard deviations from that mean, it's flagged as a statistical extreme and a signal is generated.
2. Session filter (8-12 GMT): the signal is only acted on within the London/New York session overlap, the window where liquidity concentrates and where this reversal pattern proved consistent. Outside that window, the EA doesn't trade.
3. Range filter (avoids trading against strong trends): compares a fast moving average (50) against a slow one (200). If they're too far apart relative to price, the market is trending and the EA stands down — mean reversion doesn't work well against a strong trend.
4. Optional RSI filter: requires RSI to confirm overbought/oversold conditions (default RSI ≤ 30 for buys, ≥ 70 for sells) before trading.
5. Limit-order entry: instead of buying/selling at market price, the EA places a limit order slightly better than the current price (0.2x ATR offset). This saves spread cost on every trade — one of the main reasons most reversion systems don't survive real trading costs.
6. Exit management: a wide stop loss (6x ATR) that tolerates intraday noise, take profit at 1.5x ATR, early close if the z-score returns to 0.3 (reversion already happened), and a 24-bar time-stop (if it hasn't reverted within 24 hours, the position closes).
VERIFIED RESULTS (10,000 USD account, 0.1 lot, GBPUSD H1, real broker spread)
- Full period 2020-2026: Profit Factor 1.98, Win Rate 81%, Max Drawdown 2.05%, 91 trades.
- Forward test 2023-2026 (data not used to calibrate the strategy): Profit Factor 2.38, Win Rate 85%, Max Drawdown 0.83%, 46 trades.
HOW TO SET IT UP
Installation: copy MeridianEdge.ex5 to your terminal's MQL5/Experts folder, restart MetaTrader 5, and drag the EA onto a GBPUSD H1 chart. Enable "Allow Algo Trading" in the Common tab of the properties window.
Main parameters (defaults are already optimized and backtested — no need to change them to get started):
- InpLotSize (0.10): fixed lot size per trade. Adjust to your account capital.
- InpZPeriod (20) / InpZEntry (2.5) / InpZExit (0.3): z-score window and thresholds. Entry at 2.5 standard deviations, exit when it returns to 0.3.
- InpATRPeriod (14) / InpSL_ATR (6.0) / InpTP_ATR (1.5): ATR period and multipliers for stop loss and take profit.
- InpUseRSI (true) / InpRSIPeriod (14) / InpRSILong (30) / InpRSIShort (70): RSI confirmation filter, can be disabled.
- InpUseSession (true) / InpSessionStart (8) / InpSessionEnd (12): trading time window in GMT.
- InpMaxBarsHold (24): forced close if the position has been open longer than 24 hours.
- InpUseRangeFilter (true) / InpTrendFast (50) / InpTrendSlow (200) / InpRangeMaxPct (0.005): filter that avoids trading during strong trends.
- InpLimitOffsetATR (0.20) / InpLimitMaxBars (12): distance and expiration of the entry limit order.
- InpMagic / InpSlippage: EA trade identifier and maximum allowed slippage.
Recommendation: use it as configured. The defaults are the result of the calibration and validation described above; changing them without re-testing can degrade performance.
REQUIREMENTS
MetaTrader 5, account supporting pending limit orders, GBPUSD symbol, H1 timeframe, broker with competitive spread (~1 pip). Recommended deposit from 1,000 USD.
HONEST DISCLOSURES
- This is a real statistical edge, not a certainty on any single trade. Documented win rate is 81-85%.
- Trades infrequently (~15-30 trades/year). Requires patience.
- The edge is specific to GBPUSD; tested on other pairs with no positive result.
