The Impossible Gold v2.0

Session breakout scalper for XAUUSD on the M5 timeframe. The EA identifies session high/low ranges and waits for a confirmed breakout. Four independent scoring components (ADX, EMA, ATR, RSI) must all agree above a configurable threshold before any trade opens. Every trade opens with a defined TP and SL. No martingale, no grid, and no averaging down.

Version 2.0 defaults were genetically optimised over 3 years of Every Tick data with realistic spreads. The delivered defaults are the optimised values.

Optimisation Settings

How It Works

The EA scans a configurable lookback window for the session high and low, then waits for price to break above or below with a buffer. Four scoring components evaluate the breakout quality:

  • ADX trend strength confirms directional momentum is present
  • EMA alignment validates trend direction via moving average crossover
  • ATR volatility filter removes low-volatility noise
  • RSI momentum confirms the entry is not overextended

Trading is restricted to configurable GMT session hours with an optional exclusion zone and per-day blocking. A trailing stop locks in profits as price moves favourably. An optional breakeven feature moves the stop loss to entry after a configurable trigger distance.

Risk Management

Risk-based lot sizing calculates position size from account equity and a configurable risk percentage. The EA includes several independent protection layers: daily loss limit, total drawdown limit, consecutive loss pause, daily trade cap, and a weekly regime filter that uses EMA slope on the W1 chart to prevent trading against the macro trend.

The Shield circuit breaker monitors equity peak and stops trading when drawdown from peak exceeds a configured threshold. It supports permanent stop, next-day reset, or recovery-based reset modes.

Adaptive Risk Mode

Adaptive risk controls can reduce exposure during elevated drawdown periods by progressively lowering risk multiplier, raising the minimum score threshold, and capping trade count.

A news filter can pause trading around high-impact USD events.

Monitoring

An on-chart dashboard displays scoring components, regime status, trade statistics, and Shield state. Discord webhook alerts notify on trade open, trade close, and weekly performance summaries. Daily drawdown tracking is logged in the expert tab.

Important Notes

The news filter uses the MT5 built-in Economic Calendar and works on live and demo accounts only. It does not function in the Strategy Tester. Broker spread quality affects results. A VPS is recommended for continuous operation.

Hi Paul I have been using the impossible EA gold for time now it's mixed results. At first, I used both optimized settings and prop firm settings it was not profitable I even lost one 10k account. What I realized is that the stop loss was very small and position was too big. Now I did is to reduce TP to 150 and make SL 200 also reducing maximum position size to 0.5 instead of 10. Now my worry is that it hardly reaches TP but it does positions in small profits so I need to know how to correct that Thank you.

Sorry to hear it lost on your setup. Gold is sensitive to broker spread, execution, and the exact test model, so “various durations” alone is not enough to judge it.
If you want, please share your broker, exact symbol name, test model, spread mode, deposit, and set file used, and I’ll check whether there is a setup issue.

Results on prop firm accounts can vary considerably based on broker spread and account conditions — the preset parameters may need adjustment for your specific setup. I'd recommend testing on a demo FTMO account first and adjusting Trail Start and SL to match your broker's actual spread conditions. Hi Paul I have been using the impossible EA gold for time now it's mixed results. At first, I used both optimized settings and prop firm settings it was not profitable I even lost one 10k account. What I realized is that the stop loss was very small and position was too big. Now I did is to reduce TP to 150 and make SL 200 also reducing maximum position size to 0.5 instead of 10. Now my worry is that it hardly reaches TP but it does positions in small profits so I need to know how to correct that Thank you.

Hi Vutivi — thanks for the feedback. The SL/TP change is the root cause of the issues you're describing. With SL=200 and TP=150, every loss is larger than every win — the maths doesn't work regardless of win rate. Please revert to the recommended settings: https://www.mql5.com/en/blogs/post/769728 "Hardly reaches TP" is also correct behaviour — the trailing stop closes winning trades progressively before TP is hit. That's intentional, not a fault. For the initial losses, check that FixedLots=0 and RiskPerTrade=1.5 — if FixedLots was set to a large number that would explain the oversizing. Load the v2 set file from the blog without modifications and run on demo first. Happy to help if you share your current settings.

Hi Tobias — thank you for the detailed breakdown, really helpful to see. First the good news — at 78,908 from 80,000 you're at -1.36% total drawdown, well inside FTMO's 10% limit. You're not in danger yet. The pattern you're seeing (alternating win/loss days) is typical of a volatile Gold period. The bigger concern is the two larger losing days at the end — can you tell me: What is your FixedLotSize set to or are you using Risk per trade %?
Are you running the v2.0 set file from the blog or the FTMO Challenge preset included with the EA?
One thing worth checking immediately: lower your MaxSpread to around 20 if it's currently higher — this stops the EA entering during spread spikes which are more common in volatile conditions and tend to produce the larger losing trades. Share your current inputs and I'll try and help make the right adjustments.

Hi Manish, I saw your screenshot in the comments and replied with this : The EA appears to be running correctly — 65.3% win rate on closed trades with several positions hitting TP. The negative P&L shown includes unrealised drawdown on two open buy positions, which is normal intraday behaviour for a breakout EA on gold. To help properly, a few questions: What .set file are you using — defaults or the optimised set from the blog? What broker and account type (raw/ECN or standard spread)? Are the losses from closed trades or open floating positions? The screenshot shows the EA is active and taking valid trades. If you share more detail — trade history, settings, broker spread — happy to look further.

Hi — thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately not — MQL5 Market EAs validate against MQL5's license server on every load. If your terminal can't reach it, the license check fails and the EA won't run. That's a platform-level restriction, not something I can change on my side. Your best bet is running it on a standard MT5 terminal alongside your current one — most brokers provide one, or the vanilla MetaQuotes client should work pointed at your broker's server. On the slow entries — the EA waits for all its signal conditions to align simultaneously before entering, so quiet periods are normal. If it feels overly conservative for your setup, share your set file and I'll check the Score/spread thresholds.

What stands out the most is that the EA is not just another automated system it is clear that a lot of experience, testing, and real market understanding went into building it. The confidence score logic, filters, and risk management features show great attention to detail. You've picked up on the things I care most about: the scoring logic, filters and risk controls aren't there for show — they're the result of a lot of live testing on my own prop and personal accounts, and every release tightens them further. Dear Paul, Very well developed EA. I am impressed with the clarity in UI ( especially inputs part ) and ease at which one can configure it! You seem to have in-depth understanding of the indicators you are using and the concept of trade confidence score as a trade criteria is very interesting. Will continue to test this EA with different parameters/conditions to fine-tune it for my requirement. One of my initial observation / question is about the back-test results of the EA for last 6-9 months vs 2024 & early 2025 data. Any reasons why recent months ( 6-9 months ) the results are pretty positive and older months it is drastically opposite ? Before end my comments, let me thank you again for this great work !

Hi Mohandas — thank you for the kind words and for engaging with the inputs properly, that's always good to see. Your observation about the regime split is sharp and correct. The recent 6–9 months on XAUUSD have been a trending bull phase with controlled pullbacks — exactly the environment the confidence-score logic is designed to exploit. The 2024 / early-2025 window was choppier, with sharper mean-reversion around US sessions and several gap events around CPI / FOMC that punished momentum continuation broadly. The EA's job in those regimes is to lose less, not to print — that's what the Shield (DD floor), time filter and confidence gate are doing. If you want to harden it across both regimes while you tune: Drop RiskPerTrade to 0.5–0.75% on older data — same win rate, much cleaner equity curve.
Tighten the confidence threshold by one step — fewer trades, higher conviction survivors.
Use the time filter aggressively in older periods (block 14:00–15:00 server time around NY open).
Optimise on 2024-H1 and 2025-H2 separately, then take parameters that survive both — that's how the shipped defaults are derived.
