One of the easiest ways to destroy a systematic trading strategy is to keep “improving” it.
Three losses in a row? Add a filter.
A bad month? Change the entry.
Missed a large move? Adjust the parameters.
The backtest may improve — but eventually the strategy you originally tested no longer exists.
This is one of the biggest traps in algorithmic trading: reacting to recent results instead of evidence.
Before changing one of my systems, I want to know whether something meaningful has actually changed.
- Has execution deteriorated?
- Has market behavior moved outside the conditions the strategy was designed for?
- Is live performance becoming statistically inconsistent with testing?
- Is there enough new data to question the edge itself?
If not, sometimes the most difficult decision is also the correct one: do nothing.
Every meaningful modification effectively creates a new version of the strategy — and that version needs to be tested again.
There is a big difference between improving a system and chasing its last few trades.
Good systematic trading requires knowing when to optimize.
It also requires knowing when to leave the strategy alone.

When traders compare strategies, the first number they usually notice is return.
+50% looks better than +20%.
+200% looks better than +50%.
But that comparison is incomplete.
A strategy can generate spectacular returns simply by taking spectacular risks.
What matters is not only how much a strategy made, but what it had to risk to make it.
When I evaluate an automated trading system, I look at return together with:
• maximum drawdown
• risk per trade
• exposure
• recovery after losing periods
• consistency across different market conditions
Increasing the lot size can make almost any profitable backtest look more impressive.
The difficult part is generating returns while keeping risk under control.
Return attracts attention. Risk determines whether you survive long enough to compound it.
