When traders compare strategies, the first number they usually notice is return.
+50% looks better than +20%.
+200% looks better than +50%.
But that comparison is incomplete.
A strategy can generate spectacular returns simply by taking spectacular risks.
What matters is not only how much a strategy made, but what it had to risk to make it.
When I evaluate an automated trading system, I look at return together with:
• maximum drawdown
• risk per trade
• exposure
• recovery after losing periods
• consistency across different market conditions
Increasing the lot size can make almost any profitable backtest look more impressive.
The difficult part is generating returns while keeping risk under control.
Return attracts attention. Risk determines whether you survive long enough to compound it.
