Greek parties agree to form government

Three Greek parliamentary parties agreed on 13 May to form a coalition government. The agreement was reached following emergency talks held by party representatives on Sunday. Alexis Tsipras, leader of the left-wing Syriza coalition, who will not be part of the government, spoke about the outcome of the meeting.

Tsipras said the new government will run for two years. The main forces in the coalition will be New Democracy (a conservative party) and the PASOK movement (socialists). A third participant is the Democratic Left party. All three parties agree to accept financial assistance from the European Union and IMF in return for tough cuts in budget spending. Tsipras has previously called the plan "criminal".

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Democratic Left said on Sunday that their party had not agreed to participate in the coalition. Alexis Tsipras' statement was called a lie by party representatives.

"Syriza, which came second in the May 6 early parliamentary elections, had previously received a mandate from the president to form a government, but failed to form a coalition with other parliamentary parties. Previously, New Democracy had faced similar difficulties. Had it failed to agree on a government on 13 May, Greece would have had to hold new elections.
