US administration officials said during a White House briefing (held without cameras) that they have no "plan B" in case the debt threshold is not raised. "There is no plan to help us maintain our credit rating, so there is no alternative to raising the debt ceiling. And it needs to be done before the deadline (2 August), or better still, well in advance of it," the White House said.

The pound is up (according to the forecast) 14% and the eu is up 8.4%. We are witnessing a rare case of the cart before the horse.
