Minty Owl

An evening scalper with price averaging, for the quiet hours after the New York close.

When the big markets are closed, prices often drift back after a small stretch. Minty Owl buys those dips in an uptrend, or sells those spikes in a downtrend. If the price moves further against it, it averages in up to 2 times at better prices with entries of the same size. The whole basket closes at a small profit over its average price, or at break-even once all 3 entries are in. There is no stop loss and no time limit: a basket is held, over weekends too, until it closes. Your maximum drawdown is the only exit at a loss. In the 2013–2026 gold simulation, 95% of baskets closed in profit and the rest at break-even.

How it trades

  • When: new baskets from 16:00 to 19:30 New York time, Monday to Thursday. It never opens a basket around the 17:00 rollover, when spreads widen.
  • Trend filter: H1 EMA50 vs EMA200. It only buys dips in an uptrend and only sells spikes in a downtrend.
  • ATR filters:
    • No trading while volatility is expanding (news).
    • No entry on a single spike bar.
    • Every distance is measured in ATR, so it adapts to each pair.
  • Entry: the M5 close is stretched 1.5 × ATR(M5) from its EMA20. At most one basket per evening per symbol.
  • Averaging: up to 2 more equal entries, each 1 × ATR(H1) further. No martingale: lots never grow.
  • Exit:
    • One target for the whole basket: average price + 0.3 × ATR, or break-even once all 3 entries are in.
    • No stop loss.
    • No time limit: held until the target or break-even. Your maximum drawdown is the only stop.

Settings

Setting Default Meaning
Maximum drawdown, % 30 Lots are sized so that a full basket moving 20 × ATR against every entry would cost 60% of this (30 → 18%). In the gold simulation the worst open basket reached about half the limit. Higher = more profit and deeper open dips. Reaching the limit closes everything. Trades shrink once half of it is used. Losing half of it in one day pauses new baskets until tomorrow (open baskets are kept). At the limit everything is closed

Recommended

  • Symbols: XAUUSD (tested 2013–2026). Quiet crosses such as AUDNZD, AUDCAD, NZDCAD, EURCHF and EURGBP fit the idea but are not tested yet. List them all in the Symbols setting on one chart; any timeframe.
  • Account: a raw-spread / ECN hedging account. A cost gate skips evenings when the spread would eat more than 20% of the target.
  • Testing: use a demo account first.

Panel

The panel shows:

  • New York time and the window;
  • the trend;
  • ATR against its average;
  • the M5 stretch;
  • the basket's average, target, stop, lots and profit;
  • costs;
  • today's result, equity and drawdown.

Lines on the chart mark the basket target, the next averaging level and the shared stop.

Minty Pullback

Trend pullbacks on the 20 and 50 EMA. It waits for the dip, enters when the trend resumes, and rides the trend for as long as it lasts. When the EMA20 crosses the EMA50, a trend has started. Minty Pullback does not chase that move. It waits for the price to pull back to the EMA20, then enters as soon as the trend resumes, with a stop just past the pullback. There is no fixed target. The trade stays open until the trend ends, so the few long trends pay for the many small stops. How it trades Time
