Launch price: 99 USD. Next price: 199 USD after the first 10 copies, then +100 USD after every 10 copies.

No grid, no martingale. Prop-firm ready.

Profitable every single year since 2012 in backtests — 15 years out of 15, USDJPY and Gold together, with a fixed 1 % risk per trade (2012-2018 on minute-bar data, 2019-2026 on real ticks).

BoxGate is the first EA of the Gate series, a set of rule-based MetaTrader 5 experts being released over the coming weeks, each built around one clearly explained mechanism.

The night draws the range. The morning decides.

During the quiet hours of the night, USDJPY and Gold often move inside a narrow range. When activity returns, the price leaves that range and the day often keeps that direction. BoxGate records the night range, waits for the breakout, trades it with a stop loss, and closes the position the same evening, whatever happens.

Not just another range breakout: the edge is in the selection

On most markets, trading every breakout of a night range does not pay once costs are counted. BoxGate is built on two choices that were measured, not guessed:

  • A range made for each market. USDJPY and Gold each have their own range window and their own closing time, validated on two separate periods (2012-2018 and 2019-2026). Neighbouring settings give similar results: the result does not hang on one lucky minute. The same mechanics tested on 20 other currency pairs and on stock indices did not hold up, so BoxGate trades only the two markets where the edge was measured.
  • A daily selection filter. Before each session, BoxGate reads how the previous days behaved and stands aside when the conditions favour a false breakout (about one day in five). In our tests, the trades it keeps earn about 1.5 times more per trade than taking every breakout, in both 2012-2018 and 2019-2026.

On top of that, an optional news pause closes the position before the major US releases, for accounts that restrict news trading.

Key features

  • Two markets: USDJPY and Gold (XAUUSD). Attach it to the chart: it recognises the market and applies the logic built for it.
  • Up to two trades a day on USDJPY (the second only after a stop, in the opposite direction), one on Gold.
  • A stop loss on every trade, sent with the order. No take profit: winners run until the evening close.
  • Everything closed the same day. Nothing held overnight or over the weekend: no swap, no Monday gap.
  • A daily selection filter stands aside on the days that favour a false breakout (about one day in five).
  • Risk you control: % of balance (fixed or compounding), fixed amount, or fixed lot. The lot is computed so that a stopped trade loses your chosen risk.
  • No grid, no martingale, no averaging down, no lot increase after a loss.
  • Optional news pause before US Nonfarm Payrolls and CPI releases.
  • On-chart panel: status of the day, breakout levels, open trade, risk, results and journal.

Prop-firm ready

  • Known risk on every trade, at most 2 trades a day on USDJPY and 1 on Gold, nothing held overnight.
  • At 0.5 % risk per trade with both markets, the 2019-2026 backtests show a worst day of −1.7 % and a largest drawdown of 7.8 % of the starting balance. Use 0.5 % on a prop-firm account (at 1 % the largest drawdown was 15.5 %, above the usual 10 % limit).
  • Turn on the news pause if your account restricts trading around news.

Requirements and recommendations

  • MetaTrader 5, hedging account recommended (on netting, no other EA on the same symbol).
  • Broker server time GMT+2 in winter / GMT+3 in summer (most MT5 brokers). The EA works in server time and was built and tested on this time.
  • Any chart timeframe. One chart per market.
  • Minimum balance at 1 % risk: about 1 000 USD for USDJPY, about 4 500 USD for Gold. Below 4 500 USD, run gold with "Fixed lot" = 0.01 (about 40 USD of risk per trade with Gold near 4 000 USD) or run USDJPY only.
  • Leverage 1:100 or more. A low-spread account and a VPS (the EA only trades while MetaTrader 5 is running).

Quick start

  1. Open a USDJPY chart and/or a XAUUSD chart (any suffix: USDJPY.i, XAUUSDm, GOLD…), any timeframe.
  2. Attach BoxGate, keep "Market" = From the chart symbol, choose your risk, enable Algo Trading.
  3. Check the panel: the title shows the symbol and the first line shows the status of the day.
  4. Attach it in the evening or at the weekend so that it runs when the next night session starts.

Settings

  • Market: From the chart symbol (default), USDJPY or XAUUSD (gold).
  • Risk mode: % of initial balance per trade (default, risk fixed on a reference balance) · % of current balance per trade (compounding) · fixed amount per trade · fixed lot.
  • Risk per trade (% of balance): default 1. Risk per trade (account currency): for the fixed-amount mode. Fixed lot: for the fixed-lot mode.
  • Initial balance (0 = balance at start): reference balance of the first mode; enter your starting capital to keep the risk fixed whatever the balance does.
  • Maximum lot, Max spread at entry (points, 0 = off).
  • Close before major US news (NFP, CPI): off by default; minutes before / after the release.
  • Magic number (0 = automatic per market), Order comment, Enable logging, display settings.

Good to know

  • Starting during the day: if the price has not left the range yet, the EA stays armed; if the breakout already happened while it was off, it does not chase it and waits for the next day (panel: "WAITING next session tomorrow"). A timeframe change or a restart does not disarm it.
  • Small accounts: the lot is rounded down, so the real risk is never above your setting; a trade is skipped when even the minimum lot would risk more. The panel line "lot now" shows the lot the EA would take.
  • News gaps: on a major US release the price can jump over the stop. The largest loss in the 2019-2026 backtests was 2.6 × the risk on one USDJPY trade (1.1 × on gold).
  • Losing streaks are part of a breakout strategy; the result comes from the strong trend days. About half of the trades are winners.

Backtests (Strategy Tester, not live results)

Real ticks, January 2019 to September 2026, spread, commission and swap included, 1 % fixed risk per trade (no compounding), both markets on one account:

  • USDJPY: average gain +25.9 % per year, largest drawdown 19.5 %, profit factor 1.34, about 190 trades a year.
  • Gold: average gain +11.0 % per year, largest drawdown 13.6 %, profit factor 1.28, about 155 trades a year.
  • Both markets: average gain +36.9 % per year, largest drawdown 15.5 %.
  • Independent test on 2012-2018 data (minute bars, less precise than real ticks): every year positive on both markets.
  • Compounding (screenshots), 1 % of the current balance per trade, 10 000 USD, January 2019 to September 2026: USDJPY 10 000 → 64 476 USD (+27.2 % per year compounded, largest drawdown 18.7 % of the equity peak); gold 10 000 → 21 352 USD (+10.3 % per year compounded, largest drawdown 13.1 % of the equity peak).

Drawdowns are a % of the starting balance. Results vary by year: the weakest years were close to flat (USDJPY +4.0 % in 2023, gold −3.9 % in 2019). Simulated results have limits and do not reflect real execution, slippage or future market conditions.

Risk warning

Trading currencies and gold on margin carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for every investor. You can lose part or all of your capital. Past performance, real or simulated, does not guarantee future results.
