Why do breaker blocks often outperform traditional support and resistance, and how can you tell when a broken level has truly flipped instead of becoming a fake retest trap?
Most traders view broken support and resistance as simple flips, assuming that once a level breaks, resistance automatically becomes support or vice versa. But institutions treat these levels very differently because they are not reacting to lines on a chart—they are reacting to shifts in order flow. A breaker block forms when a previously respected level fails with real force, usually accompanied by displacement and a structural shift, signaling that the market’s underlying bias has changed. What makes breaker blocks powerful is that they often represent failed positioning from the losing side of the market, meaning traders trapped on the wrong side become liquidity for institutions when price revisits the level. This creates a far more meaningful reaction than ordinary support and resistance because the market is not simply respecting history—it is resolving imbalance and repositioning.
The key difference between a strong breaker block and a fake retest trap lies in the quality of the break and the behavior on return. A true breaker usually follows a clean liquidity event and a decisive break of structure, with price returning in a controlled way rather than aggressively collapsing back through the level. If the retest shows rejection, compression, or renewed displacement in the new direction, it signals that institutions are defending the flip.
