MT5 vs. MT4
I do not do enough trading yet to know what all the little differences are, but apparently MT4 has quite a following, despite some claims that MQ is trying to push the newer MT5.

True, but different brokers use different systems to trade (besides just MT4 or MT5), such as ECN, or DD, or MM. In some cases, how they trade is as important as what they trade. Some brokers allow use of both MT platforms. That part would come down to personal preference, I guess.
(In case you don't know, ECN = Electronic Communications Network, DD = Dealing Desk, MM = Market Maker)
