Feature Request: Multiline Chart Edit or Extended Clipboard Access

Helo All!

I've actually added this comment to an older topic before, but since that topic was old, I assume it has no activity so I decided to create another topic, hoping it will get more attention.

I think mql5 has a huge limitation when it comes to clipboard access.

Currently, CEdit, or more precisely the OBJ_EDIT chart object, is practically the only native way developers can interact with the clipboard through copy, cut, and paste operations.

We can use DLLs, but it comes with some major limitations, such as platform dependency, and the mql5 market regulation. A program using DLLs is essentially flagged as a potentially dangerous program (And it is, but I think copy pasting is not).

This becomes a serious limitation when developing applications that deal with large amounts of input or output text. Imagine building a chatbot directly inside MetaTrader 5. You might be able to create a custom multiline text control, but allowing users to conveniently copy long responses or paste large prompts becomes unnecessarily difficult.

I believe either of the following improvements would make a significant difference:

  1. Native multiline support for OBJ_EDIT, ideally without the current text-length limitations. (Currently it is limited to 63 characters)

  2. Programmatic clipboard access, even if it's limited to copying text from the clipboard. Something as simple as ClipboardGetText() would already solve a major part of the problem.

Personally, I think the second option would be even more valuable, as it would give developers much greater flexibility when building custom interfaces.

I genuinely struggle to see a significant downside to exposing such functionality, especially considering how much more sophisticated MQL5 applications have become over the years.

I hope this post reaches the MetaQuotes development team and encourages them to reconsider this feature.

Thanks for reading!

What do you mean?

This would infringe upon device privacy, in fact MT5 has already been flagged as a potential risk by some antivirus software. We should avoid over-relying on features that impact user privacy, and instead employ more advanced programming techniques to address the issues at hand.

When we request someone to do something, we should offer/show them their benefit. We are using free tools. Do you see any official process to receive and handle requests?

I think there is a misunderstanding :D, I'm not asking a freelancer to do something, this is a feature that is impossible to implement in mql5 because of platform limitations... I'm requesting a feature / starting a discussion about clipboard access for developers somehow. No one can do this besides metaquotes themselves, so I think you are not really understanding the problem I'm stating.

I assume (since the native edit already allows copy paste), that this feature would not be so hard to add whereas every single developer who wants to develop something with large text inputs benefits -> developers can build more advanced products -> they can sell it on mql5 -> mql5 benefits. That's the benefit for them.

Well for GetClipboardText(), you are right, it would be a privacy risk indeed. I have to aggree on this, so let's move on to multi line CEdit.

For multi line CEdit, I think your reasoning starts to fall down, because one can already copy paste into it. It's just that it is 63 characters maximum.

So the first 63 characters of the clipboard should also be viewed as a security risk? In that case removing the Chart Object Edits native clipboard accessing property would at least make the platform, regarding privacy concerns, consistent. But I think no one wants that.

All I'm asking is this: why can users copy and paste a text that is shorter than 63 characters, but not longer than that. If it would be possible with the native edit, fine, I'll find a workaround for my application and I don't have direct access to the clipboard only the MT5 terminal does.

I'm curious about your advanced programming techniques for solving this issue. This is a platform limitation. Not solvable in a programatic way. I challenge you to make an app that allows you to copy text (longer than 63 characters) from your notepad to your metatrader application.

Of course without using DLLs.

longer than 63 characters

The 63 character limit is a separate issue, the fact is 64, is not 63.

If you type it manually, it's also limited to 64 characters.

I don't think you need more than 64 characters for the object?

My mistake, I thought it is 63. Did not count to be honest.

I need more than 64 characters. I want to be able to copy and paste text from google or notepad to my application.
