Beginner's Question

**Beginner's Question**

I downloaded MetaTrader 5 and connected it to an EA robot for automated trading. When I ran the test, it asked for various parameters, and I wasn't sure which ones to choose for the strategy that suits me best.

There are many robots available, but I'd like to start by trying out the free ones first—although it's quite complicated.

I've realized that the platform needs to be user-friendly and accessible, even for traders with no prior experience in working with robots.

What should I do?

Hey, welcome to automated trading! 🚀

If you have your own strategy that needs automation, go to Freelance  on MQL5 and create an order with your instructions and budget 👉 Freelance Orders.

If you're just exploring, start by testing free EAs in Strategy Tester (Ctrl+R) on a Demo Account in MetaTrader 5 to find what works for you. Check out the Market for free & paid robots 👉 Market.

Try both and see what fits your style.

Step 1 is understanding magic money machines don't exist. It's clear that you're thinking you'll just run software and make money because you want "user-friendly and accessible, even for traders with no prior experience in working with robots."

Can bots make money? Absolutely, it's just automation. Like I can make a doughnut by hand, or I can automate it with a machine like Krispy Kreme. But will I go buy said machine and instantly make doughnuts without learning anything? Nope. Can't just plug it in and watch it print money, as magic money machines don't exist. I can, however, learn how to operate the machine, learn how to tweak it, and then make money. Trading works the same way, if you want to make money then there's more to it than downloading software and asking what settings to use. There's no one setting that's best for everything, if that was the case then you wouldn't be able to change the settings in the first place.

And think about it, if it was that easy, don't you think everyone would do it? Like it would go viral on a scale you cannot imagine with people screaming from the rooftops how forex EA's changed their life. All they had to do was toss $100 in an account and run some magical software.

Hi, thank you for the response.

You're right, I wasn't quite sure how to phrase the question properly.

I downloaded the trading platform and installed the free bot [to run it on demo mode first]. This is where I encountered difficulties.

I couldn't figure out the system—how to operate it, conduct tests for a specific period, or track the performance of the strategy that suited me.

Should I access this through the toolbox? Or via the Strategy Tester?

When the test window opened and started running, I didn’t really understand what was happening.

Could this be related to understanding the system and the bot itself?

How can I resolve this? The guides aren’t very clear.

Since all of this is new to me, I decided to explore bots in general and the trading platform in particular.

So, I downloaded a free bot called [edit] EA for MT5.

I tried running it in a test, but again, I encountered difficulties and couldn’t grasp how the system works.

MT5 is user-friendly, but not primitive: you need to spend time + to go through the learning curve.

Use Strategy Tester (Ctrl+R) to test any EA:
 -- select symbol
 -- timeframe
 -- dates
then click Start.

Check Graph and Result tabs for basic performance (don’t expect anything extraordinary from a free EA - usually quite the opposite).

Journal tab for errors or issues during the test.

Don’t worry - everyone starts confused at first.
