Maintaining a emulator which is compatible with MT5 may be even harder than just maintaining MT4 as is.
I spent my career working with the largest software vendors and they all want to phase out older versions at some point, they only remain backwards compatible if there is no other way or a serious commercial benefit. So I always felt it was better to migrate as soon as possible.
How many lines of code are you talking about?
An MT4 emulator would need login access, MarketWatch feed and the ability to execute standard MT4 type orders (this all exists on MT5 as it was derived from MT4). What else is there to maintain?
The alternative is major disruption for the 100's of thousands of MT4 users with EX4s to migrate to MT5 that has no benefit to the user. What about all the Marketplace purchases? Are those users going to be refunded?

You can keep debating but sooner or later I suspect you will need to consider migrating

That's fine. Just provide the date for when MT4 will stop working and let me know what is going to happen with all my Freelance/Market Place purchases.

If I find it I will but as I don't use MT4 I suspect you will find out sooner than I will
Metaquotes like to pick "round" dates , so if they do it will be at 01.01.2024 00:00 xD (speculation)
I bet they have not completely written off the idea of a ... gpt solution but that'd be insane (in effort) to pull off . They have the code base but i don't know the degree to which there's counterpart codes (mt4/mt5) that can be a good enough sample base .

I would be very surprised if they announce an immediate ambush style termination off MT4.
A definitive end date needs a smooth run off time to avoid chaos and allow users time to figure out an orderly transition.
We have to remember that many people's careers are still dependent on this application which has been an institution in the trading community for almost 20 years.

I would not be surprised at all.
Well we keep comparing to other companies but we must remember each case is unique .
I mean from a finances perspective , spending resources to manage to keep mt4 around while there is no income stream from it is suicide .
Furthermore i believe when the massive switch to mt5 occurs , we will see a "spring" in trading algorithms and the true sense of "algorithmic" trading will emerge , vs "automated trading of manually overfitted concepts , or paper trading manually overfitted concepts" .
MQ may be worried that the "users" will get angry and switch to ... other platforms but these users have their coder acquaintances and the coder acquaintances when asked will promptly reply "yeah lets build it in MT5" (if the question is where can we code this now?) because its the most cost effective solution . I mean let's entertain the idea they will switch to trading view . Okay , backtest your strategy, or , optimize it , or export the signal points and send it to pytorch and let your 2 nvidia RTX 4020ti work on it. So the dynamic will be they stay on the Metatrader-verse (xD) , or they move away lose money and come back .
Note : This is with what is currently available now . If they wait another half a year or so they may run into issues like TV offering more toward optimization or even new unexpected platforms from other big forums :) Hence my suggestion to pull the plug now .
If they pull the plug now ,some damage control , will be mitigated by the massive influx of mt5 project , they will lose some will gain some .
If they wait until the above happens they will lose users , lose brokers , and die off .
PS : They could even ensure TV wont go that route any time soon (testing , opt , ml) by having the ability to directly import and test a trading view strategy in the tester . The crowd that is not pleased with testing in TV will get familiar with MT5 this way , so you gain potential users , you bring more projects to the ecosystem and you make it harder for your competitor when they launch their "equivalent" in the future . And that can even be done by users not mq . In fact if you are a seller reading this , cater to that there may be demand for it .If they wait until the above happens they will lose users , lose brokers , and die off .

I do suspect Metaquotes have some news lined up soon so we shall see.
