I would say that it depends on your strategy and EA. For example, if your EA is using a SMA of period 200, then a max bars of just a little bit more than 200 is sufficient for your EA to work properly and optimum resource usage. If using an EMA of period 200, then 800 max bars is just fine.

Given that the Strategy Tester, also begins tests with only about 1000 bars of data, it is a good count to consider. Most EAs will not be needing more than 1000 bars for their technical analysis. So, use that as an indicative count and adjust according to your EA's requirements.

Only you can really answer the question based on what you anticipate your needs to be.
