Cross Over Trend is a simple and effective technical indicator for MetaTrader 5 that visualizes the relationship between an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and a Simple Moving Average (SMA).
The indicator makes trend direction easier to identify by automatically separating the chart into UpTrend and DownTrend phases based on the EMA/SMA crossover.
How It Works
The indicator compares the current values of the selected EMA and SMA:
-
EMA > SMA → UpTrend
-
EMA ≤ SMA → DownTrend
When the EMA is above the SMA, the indicator displays the trend in the UpTrend color. When the EMA moves below the SMA, the indicator switches to DownTrend.
This provides a clean visual representation of the current market trend and helps traders identify potential trend changes without having to manually compare two moving averages.
Key Features
-
EMA/SMA crossover trend detection
-
Separate UpTrend and DownTrend visualization
-
Configurable EMA period
-
Configurable SMA period
-
Independent timeframe selection for EMA/SMA calculations
-
Works with the current chart timeframe or a selected timeframe
-
Lightweight and efficient calculation
-
Suitable for scalping, intraday trading and swing trading
-
Can be used as a standalone trend indicator or as a filter for trading strategies and Expert Advisors
Input Parameters
SMAEMA_TF
Select the timeframe used for the SMA and EMA calculations.
Default:
Current Chart Timeframe
The indicator can also calculate the SMA/EMA relationship using another timeframe, allowing multi-timeframe trend analysis.
SMA_Period
Defines the period of the Simple Moving Average.
Default:
20
EMA_Period
Defines the period of the Exponential Moving Average.
Default:
21
Example
With the default settings:
SMA = 20
EMA = 21
When the EMA is above the SMA, the indicator identifies an UpTrend.
When the EMA is below or equal to the SMA, the indicator identifies a DownTrend.
The crossover between the two moving averages can therefore be used as a simple indication of a potential change in market direction.
Multi-Timeframe Analysis
One of the useful features of Cross Over Trend is the ability to select a separate timeframe for the SMA and EMA calculations.
For example:
-
Chart: M5
-
SMA/EMA timeframe: H1
This allows traders to use the higher-timeframe EMA/SMA trend as a directional filter while trading on a lower timeframe.
Designed for Simplicity
Cross Over Trend intentionally focuses on one core concept:
EMA vs. SMA = Trend Direction
There are no unnecessary oscillators or complicated calculations. The result is a clean and easy-to-understand trend visualization that can be incorporated into discretionary trading systems as well as automated strategies.
Important Note
Cross Over Trend is a technical analysis tool and does not provide guaranteed trading results. Moving-average crossovers are lagging indicators and can produce false signals, particularly during sideways or highly volatile market conditions.
Always combine technical analysis with appropriate risk management and test the indicator under your own trading conditions before using it with real funds.
Cross Over Trend – Keep your trend analysis simple.
EMA vs. SMA.
One crossover.
One clear trend direction.
