My EA not working when gold price below $3000

Result bectest real data tick 100%
Sep 2025 - Aug 2026 gold ~$4,400 =211 trades
Sep 2024 - Aug 2025 gold ~$2,800 =18 trades
Sep 2023 - Aug 2024 gold ~$2,100 =3 trades
Sep 2022 - Aug 2023 gold ~$1,850 =3 trades

The issue is my fixed 500-point minimum candle range. As gold gets cheaper, candles that big become less frequent.
The EA isn’t losing, it just stops trading.
Anyone had the same issue? Better to use % of price or ATR?

War market regime

Ryan L Johnson, 2026.09.18 00:21

I faced the same issue as a longtime swing trader. As I recall, the 2020 pandemic was fairly neutral as well and there were a couple more time periods of that. Fortunately, I more recently developed a scalping (not HFT) algo which alternates between neutral and profitable in shorter lengths of time. My conclusion drawn therefrom is that neutral periods are better than losing periods so hey, why complain... and either/or is a natural "feature" of any net profitable algo.

In other words, I'm not in the habit of modifying my algo on the fly just because current market conditions don't provide many trading opportunities. As the age-old idiom holds, "Let the market come to you."

Having said that, there's nothing preventing you from devising an entirely new shorter term algo while your present algo continues to monitor the market.
