Doesn't updating a purchased EA on any computer reduce its activation?

I'm reaching out to you because I have a conflict with an acquaintance of mine.

I can't find an answer no matter how much I search.

My friend says that “updates are different from activations.

activation is when you actually attach it to the chart and start trading. Therefore, if you are logged into MQL from any computer, updating from the buy list will not change the activation.” 

I am arguing that “updates must also be done on the same computer (server) that activated them, so activations are not used”.

Which is correct?

Correct! Doing it on a different computer would consume an extra activation count.
