MT5 Tester - Poor Historic Data Quality

I am trying to run my EA on [redacted] tick data but the data quality is only 8% when I run it on 3 or more years of data. Does anyone know a broker that has a similar price action to [redacted] ? How did you resolve this issue?  Thank you in advance

Try right clicking on your given symbol in the Market Watch window ==> Symbols ==> Ticks (tab up top), and download all ticks since 1970 (or as many as possible).

We can't discuss broker recommendations here.

That been said, you should first see for how far back they provide tick data, and then restrict your back test to only that time range.

For example, if they only provide 1 year of tick data, then if you test 3 years, the first two thirds will be based on virtual/synthetic based ticks based on M1 OHLC data.

Based on your 8% for 3 years, that would be approximately 2-3 months of tick data, which seems too little, so discuss the issue with them. That should have been your first contact instead of this forum.

Hi Fernando, thank you for your response. I messaged the broker first of course, but they could not help.

In that case I will probably create a custom symbol with 3rd party data. The data between the 3rd party and the individual brokers will likely differ though.

How do professional traders get around this issue, is the trade copier the solution, or perhaps running the strategies optimised for the 3rd party on the broker?

Please note, that you are not allowed to Copy Trade on most prop-firms. You will get disqualified.

As for "how do the pros do it", well I can say that I also use a prop-firm (not the one you mentioned and I redacted), and they provide more than enough tick data, so I have no need to use 3rd party data.

So, maybe the lack of tick data you are experiencing is due to a technical issue on your side and not so much that the prop-firm does not provide sufficient data.

Also, when back testing, I test on various brokers, to make sure that my EAs can adapt to different contract specifications and trade conditions. One should not over-fit optimisations to a specific broker's conditions or data. Your strategy and EA code should self-adapt to a reasonable degree to prevent over-dependence.

I see, that makes sense. Thank you. I will carry out more research on other prop firms. May I ask, just as a benchmark, how many years of real tick data does the prop firm you mentioned store on mt5, on an average market?

Depends on the symbol, but for most of the major currency pairs, it has data since December 2011, so approximately 13+ years of tick data.
