20-07-2010 Weekly currency futures analysis.

Currency futures positions report as of 20.07.10 (IMM positioning).
This analysis is based on the Commitment of Traders Report (CTR) of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission. IMM data shows an analysis of open futures positions on each Tuesday concluded at the International Money Market (IMM). The International Money Market is a division of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
The report divides market participants into two groups: commercial trader - participants who use futures contracts to hedge, and non-commercial trader - participants who use futures contracts to speculate.
The latest IMM data covers the period from 6 to 13 July.
After the US dollar hit a high in early June (which has since corrected by 5%), speculative investors began cutting back on their long dollar positions, and there was a net short position of $5.4bn last week. This partly reflects a decline in short positions in the euro and a build-up of longs in the Australian dollar, Canadian dollar, Swiss franc and Japanese yen.
Risks to the euro/dollar pair took on a dual nature. Since the volume of short Euro positions reached 40% of open interest at the beginning of May, three-quarters of positions have been liquidated. This means that, all other things being equal, the upside risks to the EUR/USD pair have declined. The latest spurt towards the 30th figure, which occurred after the IMM data was collected, indicates that short positions in the single currency are further reduced.
