They did not know that Stalin had administratively cut off Abkhazia and Ossetia in favour of Georgia.
Abkhazia and Ossetia which were not part of Georgia before the Soviet Union. The USSR collapsed ...
and "tasty" Abkhazia and Ossetia also wanted to live on their own... As they were not part of Georgia before the USSR.
