WHAT IS REAL IN GOLD TICK DATA, AND WHAT IS NOT
An honest note.
Live signal: One real account, started on day one with the same version you buy. We never run several accounts and publish only the survivor.

1. We looked for patterns. Almost none survived.
Before this robot existed, we tested the ideas that fill the MQL5 Market. We used real XAUUSD tick data from 2025 and 2026, with the real spread, $7 per lot commission and slippage on every fill. The rule was simple: choose the settings on 2025, then run 2026 blind without touching anything.
Most ideas died:
- Band reversal arrows (TMA-type indicators). As drawn on the chart they earned +3.65 ATR per signal. Traded in real time they earned +0.07. The beautiful arrows were drawn using bars that did not exist yet. That is repainting, and it explains most “perfect” indicator screenshots.
- Every non-repainting band we tried (Bollinger, Keltner, linear regression, zero-lag and others) lost about 0.05 R per trade after costs.
- Band cross “zones” in real time: zero edge.
- Fractal stop-and-reverse on M1: 106,829 trades lost $32,400 with costs. With zero spread and zero commission it still lost $3,700. There was nothing there to begin with, and costs only made it worse.
- Grid and martingale: in one test the balance showed +$29,244 while the open loss reached −$60,186. The balance curve looks smooth because losing trades are simply never closed.
- Optimised grid settings: the best 2025 settings had a $1,173 drawdown. The next year the same settings drew down $10,205.
Our honest conclusion: gold tick data has no repeatable shape you can read from candles, indicators or arrows and trade at a profit after costs. Anything that looks like such a pattern on a chart is usually hindsight, repainting or curve fitting.
2. What actually held up
Only one thing survived the blind test: breakouts. When gold breaks a level that many traders are watching (a swing high or low, a channel edge, a multi-day or weekly level), it tends to keep going for a while.
This is not a pattern in the chart. It comes from how orders work. Stop losses and pending orders cluster beyond obvious levels. When price reaches them, they fire as market orders, add fuel to the move, and volatility expands.
Eleven independent engines trade this on different structures and timeframes, with risk weighted across them. The results, with real spread, commission and slippage:
- 10,514 trades in total.
- Profit factor 1.99 in 2025 (where the settings were chosen) and 2.05 in 2026 (blind).
- 71% of trades won.
- 19 of 21 months were positive.
It is not spectacular, and that is the point. A real edge in gold is small. It only works across many trades, with a fixed stop loss on every one.
3. How banks and institutions trade, and how we trade
Banks and large institutions do not make money by predicting candles. They make it in four ways:
- Market making. They quote both bid and ask and earn the spread on huge volume. Your spread is their income.
- Seeing order flow. They see client orders before the market does. A dealer who knows where large orders and stop clusters sit knows where liquidity is, not where price “should” go.
- Size and execution. A fund buying a large gold position cannot just click buy. It splits the order over time (TWAP, VWAP and similar algorithms) and needs other people’s orders to trade against, often the stops resting beyond obvious levels.
- Speed and location. Their servers sit next to the exchange and liquidity providers (colocation). They react in microseconds, not milliseconds.
A retail trader cannot compete in any of these, so we don’t try. We don’t scalp the spread, fade every move or predict the next candle. We use the one footprint big players cannot hide: when liquidity beyond a level is taken, the move that follows is real. We wait for price to break the level, then join the move with a stop order. We let others fight over the noise.
4. Why speed and fill quality matter
A breakout system enters exactly when the market is moving fastest, and that is when execution quality matters most:
- Slippage is the hidden cost. A stop order becomes a market order when it triggers. On a fast gold candle the fill can come several dollars away from the trigger price. The robot cancels trades whose fill is too far from the planned price (more than 0.06% of price), because a bad fill turns a good trade into an average one.
- Spread and commission decide small edges. On M1 scalping, costs ate everything we tested. Breakout trades aim for larger moves, so costs are a smaller share of each trade, but a raw-spread account is still clearly better.
- Some hours are blocked. The daily reopen (01:00–01:30 server time) has wide spreads and gaps. The minutes around major US news (15:15–15:40) fill unpredictably. Weekend gaps cannot be stopped out. The robot does not trade these windows.
- Latency. Every millisecond between your terminal and the broker server is time in which price can move. Use a VPS close to your broker’s trade server, not a home PC on Wi-Fi.
- The tester is not the market. Even with real ticks, the Strategy Tester assumes fills that live markets do not always give. We have had live days that the tester did not show. Expect live results somewhat below backtest results; anyone who promises otherwise is not telling you the truth.
5. What this means for you
- There is no secret pattern, and no robot finds one. Be suspicious of anyone who claims otherwise, especially with a smooth curve and no live signal.
- A real edge in gold is modest. You keep it through cost control, good execution and a stop loss on every trade.
- Judge any robot, including this one, by an out-of-sample test with real ticks plus a live signal, not by screenshots.
