📉 Why Extreme Spreads Destroy Breakout Systems
Breakout strategies rely on precision — especially around the highs and lows of candles (H1, H4, D1…). These are key levels where momentum is expected to explode.
But when a broker has extreme or unstable spread, everything changes.
❌ What’s the problem?
Spread = the gap between bid and ask.
When this gap becomes abnormally wide, especially near key levels, the price doesn’t move in a clean, train-like fashion.
Instead, it behaves like a stop-hunting trap — creating fake shadows, false breakouts, and even non-existent wick spikes.
📍 Why does it happen?
It’s not just “volatility” — often it’s low liquidity or internal dealing desk manipulation.
Brokers can create artificial candles by widening the spread locally, not from interbank data.
That means a breakout that triggers on one broker... never happened on another.
Result? Inconsistent trades, failed signals, and blown stops.
🔍 Real Example:
Let’s say your breakout system is watching the high of the H1 candle.
At the moment price gets close:
A good broker with a stable spread may not trigger yet.
But a bad broker suddenly widens the spread → fake breakout happens → your order is triggered → price reverses instantly.
That trade never had a chance. It wasn’t the strategy’s fault — it was abnormal execution.
✅ Takeaway:
If you're running a breakout system, especially with short SLs, never underestimate the role of spread quality.
Always test your strategy on multiple brokers with real tick data to expose this kind of manipulation.
