Hourly Volatility Monitor
Understand the hours behind your trading strategy.
Markets do not move at the same pace throughout the day. Hourly Volatility Monitor turns your symbol's historical H1 candles into a clear ranking of all 24 hours, from the largest typical price range to the smallest. Instead of estimating session activity by eye, compare what the broker's historical candles actually show.
The result is a dedicated full-chart dashboard that can be placed on a separate chart or display. No additional oscillators, trading arrows or crowded candlestick overlays are required.
What you can learn
The indicator groups completed H1 candles by hour and calculates average High–Low range, median High–Low range and average absolute Open–Close movement. It then ranks the hours using your chosen measure. Each hour includes its observation count, so you can see how much history supports the result.
For range and mean-reversion traders
Identify hours that have historically displayed smaller candle ranges. Use this information as one part of your session selection process, alongside spread, news, trend conditions and position risk. A quieter historical hour is not proof of a sideways market or a guarantee of lower risk.
For trend and momentum traders
Locate hours with historically larger intrabar movement and use the ranking to plan when to monitor momentum setups, breakouts or volatility expansion. Large High–Low ranges measure activity, not bullish or bearish direction.
For scalpers and intraday traders
Compare the activity profile of different hours before choosing when to focus on the market. The median option helps reduce the influence of unusually large individual candles, while the average candle-body option focuses on net intrabar movement rather than total range.
For Expert Advisor users
Review the historical activity of each hour when considering the time-of-day settings of an automated strategy. The indicator provides information for your analysis; it does not connect to, control or automatically optimize an Expert Advisor.
For a dedicated second screen
Open the monitor on its own chart window and dedicate a display to the 24-hour ranking. Its dark, high-contrast panel is designed for quick reading without a price-chart overlay competing for attention.

How to begin
1. Install Hourly Volatility Monitor on a chart of the symbol you want to analyze.
2. Keep History Bars at 5000 or select a different lookback.
3. Select the metric and units that match your analysis.
4. Check the sample count for each hour; reduce Minimum Samples only when you accept the limitations of a smaller sample.
5. Compare the ranking with your strategy's preferred trading hours.
Interpretation and limitations
The selected history is a rolling window of completed H1 candles. Results update after new H1 candles close and may differ between brokers, symbols and historical periods. A fixed time offset does not automatically adjust for daylight-saving changes. In price-unit mode, a High–Low value of 5.40 on XAUUSD represents a $5.40 price range per ounce, not profit.
Historical activity does not predict the next candle, guarantee a range, establish trend direction, include trading costs or provide buy and sell signals. Use the monitor as a statistical planning aid alongside your own risk management.
