I have an i7-3770k (4 cores/8 threads) OC'd from 3.5ghz to 4.2ghz.. 32gb RAM, SATA SSDs. I can run all 8 at a time.. but other processes are hindered (network traffic, screensaver, disk usage). I keep one thread open to run system processes smoothly.

Once I get an extra $5,000... AMD Threadripper 9980x.. 128 threads!
see how the tester is affected if you lowered the priority of metatester service(s).

that would depend on how stable your system is. I dont need to do this on my current system.

It entirely depends of the test done and the config of the computer. I can guarantee you I can run an optimization able to "crash" any computer, you just need to use enough data to flood it. (And "crash" can mean different things, depending of the OS, the hardware, the config, etc...).

The recommendation is to use physical cores only because a recommendation can't anticipated all usage. If you know what you are doing you can use all cores, depending of the exact test you are doing, as you seem to do.

Anyway, the topic is about backtest, not optimization ! Answer was given and off-topic discussion started from post #3.

oops. my appologies to the OP! sometimes new posters will confuse backtesting with optimisations. I will look at the image next time to confirm the OPs meaning!
