MT4 and MT5 not opening on my MAC

I tried opening MT4 and 5 and neither would open. Or at least physically appear on my monitor.

They have been working well up until a few days ago.

When I tried opening a second time A message said they were already open. But I couldn't find in my Doc ( I'm on. MAC)

and they were not hidden behind another program or anything else open.

So I decided to try and reinstall MT4 for a start. The message says it was installed successfully, But I still have the same problem.

The only thing that actually opened up on installation was this MQL5 Terminal

All that seems to open is the following ( please see attached file)

As I said I am on Mac and not sure what has gone wrong?

Thanks

Greg

That's likely a problem with WINE. The "MQL5 Terminal", as you've put it, is not from MetaTrader but rather that's the shortcut trying to launch WINE which usually disappears and then you see MetaTrader.

No native macOS version of MetaTrader 4 or 5 exists, it's just the x86 (MT4) or x64 (MT5) version packaged with WINE to run on macOS.

The last update to macOS was May 12, so it's entirely possible your system downloaded and installed the update a few days ago which broke WINE.

You also didn't mention what Mac you're using, as if it's Apple Silicon then WINE is even more fickle than it would be on an intel Mac.

But you can likely fix this by either installing WINE from a 3rd party, using something like PlayOnMac (a WINE variant), or downloading MetaTrader as a .PKG file that includes WINE and running the installation process and rebooting the computer after. You can also use something like Parallels or  VMware Fusion to just run Windows directly on your Mac. You can also get a Windows VPS that you remote desktop into (Azure/AWS/Google all offer free 12-month trials) and then you'd just run MetaTrader remotely.

The latter, a Windows VPS on a proper server, is what I'd recommend for trading because using an emulation layer for something critical like finance is a bit absurd, I don't personally even use systems without ECC RAM in case of a bit flip. Far too many things can go wrong with running MetaTrader on a Mac and if you're even the least bit serious about trading the potential losses aren't worth it. The Windows VPS is literally free; there's no reason to be messing with emulation layers to run it on a Mac.

This thread confirms once again what I experienced with MetaTrader on Mac and for all those who are tired of this error prone Mac adaption I highly recommend reading my article about it.

I'm on MacOS M1 and sometimes my MT5 doesn't open as well.

I solved it by going to activity monitor and force quitting everything wine or MT5 related.

For MT4 I cannot solve. I would say Virtual Machine is the best solution right now, and I don't expect it to ever be available on Mac again.

Thanks you for all your help. I will work through it tomorrow my time. Yes I do suspect it is to do with the Wine interface
