Why don't you ask the author/seller of your newly purchased EA to tell you how to get trustworthy backtesting results with this specific expert advisor.
Hi, Thanks for the response. I've reached out to them several times. They are very responsive, but not very helpful. I get the impression that they don't want to "over promise" what is possible, even though they have very similar backtest results on their website. They've encouraged me to use the default settings. So, I've had the default settings running in a demo account for the past three weeks. But, the results aren't close to what I was expecting.

Are the demo results similar to what you are getting in the strategy tester for the same period?
If they are, then its all normal.

Unfortunately, the demo results aren't close to what I'm getting in strategy tester. That's the problem. I don't know where the disconnect is. I was hoping someone might be willing to take a look at it for me and help me figure it out.

Since we don't have your EA, the only thing we can do is take a look at your strategy tester settings and backtest results and tell you if there is something wrong with them.
But you need to know that if your EA is a scalper and your loading some tick data suite to test it, you will never match your broker demo account results, because you are testing on different historical tick data.

Hi Eleni, Maybe that's it ... The EA is a scalper, so maybe it's just different historical tick data. Can provide some insight around the "Spread?" When I set it to "Current," I get very choppy results - similar to what I'm seeing with the demo account. However, when I reduce the spread to 5 or 2, I get very smooth and consistent results. The algo has a spread setting (i.e., max spread). I've tried setting that to 3 and 5 in my demo testing, but it doesn't seem to make a difference in the demo results. Can you think of anything else I might try?

Without understanding the EA and its optimal market conditions, and considering the unreliability of the MT4 strategy tester, you will never get accurate backtest results.
For serious backtesting, you should use the MT5 strategy tester, which downloads real historical tick data directly from the broker’s server, providing results that closely mirror live market conditions.

Okay. I might try MT5. Thanks for your help!

Hello,
I've been a pretty dedicated Forex trader for the past 3 years. I pretty much trade every day and work with a couple of different strategies and algos on different timeframes.
I've had a consistent problem over the years with backtesting. I subscribe to Tick Data Suite and regularly update my data, but my backtesting using strategy tester is generally way off from my demo and live trading.
Recently, I purchased a new EA and I have been able to generate amazing backtest results with it. I can generate these results across several different pairs using the same settings and during different periods of time.
However, when I use the EA in a demo account with the same settings, I can't replicate the results ... not even close!
I'm frustrated because I would like to get the value out of my EA, but it seems that my backtesting is incredibly unreliable.
I'm seeking someone who is an expert at backtesting who has a trackrecord of accurate results who I can work with to find consistent settings for the EA I'm working with.
If you're interested, please reach out and let me know how we can work together.
Thanks,
B
