I would think hopefully, that you as a the person writing the new code, are capable of understanding and knowing the difference.
As long as you do not copy any of the code, and write something from scratch using only the idea, then you are totally safe.
I have had this question in mind for a long time but did not want to ask because I feared I might not even be able to comprehend the answers.
You come across a code in the codebase .
If not expressly expressed by the author , or , the referenced author , that you can freely use the materials you are looking for another way to implement the idea or you ask for permission.
Now by asking for permission , if they deny you are placing a target on derivative works of yours even if they are made in a different manner than the original.
It gets even more complicated if its expressed that the materials can be used , you use them , and then that statement vanishes.
:)
Of course one wonders , why would a sane person upload the code in the code base without the intent of allowing free use for it ?I have had this question in mind for a long time but did not want to ask because I feared I might not even be able to comprehend the answers.
In simple terms — you cannot sell code made by anyone else without permission from the author. You can only sell YOUR code.
That is not a valid argument. If you post your photo on social media, does it mean that anyone can use it? NO!

Interesting argument .
Well if i post my photo on social media alongside a workout routine and not just for socializing then my photo is the outcome and anyone can copy the workout routine which achieves the outcome .
So within the context of social media that would resemble what is going on in the codebase better .
What the "code" does is the outcome and the code shows you how to get to the outcome.
We are not talking about stealing the outcome.
As a follow-up, most people post public code as a means to share knowledge and ideias with other coders doing the same, and not for other people to make money from their code without permission.
Interesting argument .

Correct! The Copyright prohibits people from "copying" the code, not the ideia, while a Patent prohibits people from using the ideia.

exactly . I'm not posting my face on social media for other people to become more beautiful . Non comparableI gave the example of the photo, because the copyright laws for code, writing (stories, novels, books), and photos (and videos) are all very similar.
ow okay , makes sense like that
