Does anyone know if the webplatform supports auto trading or do you need to have a local instance of the MT5 running?

No, the web terminal does not support Algo or Auto trading. It has to be via a desktop terminal, either locally, or remotely on a standard VPS, or via Metaquotes' virtualisation service of MetaTrader (i.e. MQL5 VPS).
