C++ knowledge (even basic) would be a plus but MQL5 has it's own detailed API documentation, so you could start there too.

I'm a complete novice to programming in general and when looking through the MQL5 documentation it looked quite complicated to comprehend as a pure beginner.

Start learning MQL5 - learn this language. No need to learn all sorts of 'C++'.

How best to start your studies: set yourself some kind of task and try to complete it. At the same time, you will study the Documentation and gradually learn the MQL5 language.
