In Greece, a 24-hour general strike against anti-crisis measures led to a massive scuffle with police officers, with five policemen injured, Reuters reported. The protest was organised by Greek unions ADEDY and GSEE, which unite more than half of all working Greeks.
Security forces detained more than 100 people who took part in the rally. Twenty demonstrators are expected to face charges of disturbing public order and defacing property.
More than 50,000 people marched to the parliament building today, shouting slogans against fiscal austerity measures. Demonstrators threw stones and Molotov cocktails at police officers and set fire to a billboard on Syntagma Square in front of parliament and to a tree in the National Garden outside parliament.
The police responded with tear gas. According to the protesters, several people were injured as a result of the police action.
