Can I automated trade in shares or is it just CFDs and FOREX?

Sorry all, quick newbie question. 

I want to get started automated trading, so just doing my research. 

I feel most comfortable in dealing in shares, but it seems like automated trading platforms like MQ4 and 5 only have brokers for CFD and FOREX? I've got a demo with IG. 

Any advice appreciated

You can only trade stock exchange with MT5, if you find a broker who provides symbols that you want to trade.
