How to find the best settings for an indicator

I'm wondering if there's any trick to find the best settings for an indicator on a symbol ?

If the best settings are implied to produce largest profit, the best way is to craft an expert adviser based on this indicator and optimize it.

donnyf : finding best periods for example manually take some time.

 
to get the best setting also add the indicator many times to a chart with each having different settings the you can know which of the setting is most profittable.
 

no trick but hard work~

make an EA use the indicator,then then test again and again.

 i develop an EA and cost half a year to find the relative best parameters.

Indeed, it take a lot of time. Some say that even when done, the settings have to be reactualised ... But i guess when it's done on large period (1 yr) it should be enough.
