Why does MT5 data for EURUSD go further back than the birth of the Euro.

I've noticed this during backtests, the Data goes back to 1990 I believe, and the birth of the Euro was in 1999.

To my knowledge this is because ECU existed before the Euro. Then again, I might be completely off here. Candles
