Check this thread for a list of MT brokers. Open a couple demos and see what you think of them. (personally I have demos with Alpari and FIBO, both seem pretty solid. I have a live mini account with ibfx and it is fine other than there is too much lost connection time. If that doesn't get straightened out soon, I will switch it.)

As far as when signals are generated, that totally depends on what EA you are using. There are many of them and they all behave quite differently.
