OK, let's take things back a step.

How are you creating these rectangles that you are having problems with? Are you manually creating them like so:

You should be able to select Draw As Background in the object's properties:

 

 

Please also be aware that when you overlap rectangles, you may get strange effects:

well, when i choose that, the damn thing just disappears completely. I want the rectangle to be grey on the inside but no matter what colour i pick , the shape disappears nonetheless. It's still there but it is invisible, although i can click on it since i already roughly know where i place it.

Right click one of those 5 handles then select Rectangle Properties.

Then post a picture of what you see in the Common tab
