Of course it can be done. Theoretically it's beautiful. But practically outside this limited area this decomposition is useless. Or almost useless.
P.S. Looked at the students that popped up in the link. Here is a good example of how out of range you can get absurdity.

For extrapolation, it's not worth trying.
Decompose into components, discard some, put back together. Use the result to see the direction (where the slope is).
