There were x passes done during optimization, x results have been discarded as insignificant - what does this mean?

also this message - optimization stopped, x cache records were used, x cache records rejected

what exactly does this mean and how do I get around it?

actually I did do a search for it and nothing came up - I may have had a misspell and didn't realize it. Sorry for the hassle.
