Hedging has a dirty connotation in the Forex market. In the Forex market, hedging is often thought of as going long and short on the same pair at the same time.
This is disastrous, and an atrocity to the term ‘hedging.’ If you buy and sell the same pair at the same time, the only way you can truly profit is from the spread compressing (getting smaller), which means that your top-end profit potential is limited.
In actuality, it’s much more likely that spreads may spike during news announcements which could entail a loss on BOTH sides in this scenario.
Some traders say ‘well, I’ll close out the long at a top and wait for a bottom and then close out the short.’
This just doesn’t make sense. Because if you could time your long exit that well, then why wouldn’t you just initiate the short position there after closing the long position?
You still have to time the market in one of these ‘hedges.’ But extra risk is exposed from the fact that spreads can widen, and potentially trigger stops, margin calls, or any other number of bad events that simply aren’t worth it because there is so little upside of doing so.
The textbook definition of hedging, and this is what is taught in business schools around the world, is that a hedge is an investment that’s intended to offset potential losses or gains that may be incurred by a companion investment.

Gold Demand Seen Lower In 2nd Half Of 2013- Thomson Reuters GFMS

Gold demand in the second half of 2013 is forecast to fall as consumer buying will likely be lighter than what was seen earlier in the year, said a London-based metals consultancy.

“Generally heightened consumer inventories among the traditional buying regions strongly suggest that gold’s massive trading volumes in mid-year will now dwindle,” said Thomson Reuters GFMS in its Gold Survey 2013.

Physical demand may fall, but prices could rise into year’s end, supported by geopolitical tensions and a possible fight over the U.S. debt ceiling. They forecast prices could test $1,500 an ounce by early 2014. On Wednesday, December Comex gold prices settled at $1,363.60.

Consumers were big physical gold buyers after prices fell almost 16% in three trading days in mid-April. They stepped up again in June when prices fell following short-selling and sales by professional traders on heightened expectations of an end to the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing program.

Rhona O’Connell, head of metals research and forecasting at Thomson Reuters, said during the June buying spree, bar hoarding reached an all-time high for the half-year and jewelry fabrication rose to its highest levels in six years. Consumers in a number of countries bought gold jewelry with higher carat-weight, she said. “In America this is the first time this has happened in over a decade, while there has also been a shift away from alternative materials and back towards gold,” O’Connell said.

Chinese jewelry fabrication rose 41% to a record 345 metric tons during that time, she said. “Consumers were presented with a rare buying opportunity after more than a decade of rising prices, and middle-aged women, commonly dubbed ‘Chinese Aunties,’ in charge of domestic budgets, were swift to respond, building stocks for gifts later in the year. This was typical of the patterns elsewhere in the market. India is the exception, where changes in import and distribution rules have meant that inventories generally are low, while smuggling is on the increase,” O’Connell said.

She said that 2013 is on tap to be the first year in modern times when China will overtake India as the metal’s No. 1 consumer, by as much as 100 metric tons.
