Today's small gain in the dollar or the fall in the pound following the publication of UK inflation data was nothing compared to the sell-off in crypto currencies. Bitcoin was down some 15% while Ripple had shed 30% at one stage. Cyptos have been held back in recent days amid increasing levels of scrutiny from regulators, most notably in South Korea, where the government is planning to clamp down on trading in virtual currencies. The justice ministry is apparently working on a bill to ban cryptocurrency trading through exchanges. US FED's William Dudley spoke on Thursday at the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association in New York. 'Over the longer term I am considerably more cautious about the economic outlook,” said Dudley, 'Keeping the economy on a sustainable path may become more challenging,” due to the risk of 'overheating'. He made the point that there is a strong case to keep gradually raising rates and that the forecast for 3 rate hikes this year is a reasonable starting point. Global equity markets rallied last week during the first week of trading of 2018. US and European indices gained around 2% after economic data provided more evidence that the ongoing economic expansion is still strong and widespread. US nonfarm payrolls came in below consensus last Friday at 148k (consensus: 190k) due to weakness in the retail sector. The official US jobs data for December will be reported on Friday morning by the US Department of Labor, and consensus expectations are pointing to a likely continuation of the strong job creation that prevailed through much of last year (September weather disruptions notwithstanding). Around 190,000 non-farm jobs are expected to have been added to the US economy in December following a better-than-expected showing of 228,000 jobs added in November. The London Stock Exchange was formed in 1760 in a Cub in Jonathan's Coffee House by 150 Brokers who were originally thrown out of the Royal Exchange for their rude manners and rowdy behaviour. Transferring to the nearby Jonathan's Coffee House. The Brokers started listing and trading in a few commodities, and few provisions (such as coal, salt and paper) and currencies. Dollar's selloff accelerates overnight on sharp selloff in treasury yields and stays weak in Asian session. 10 year yield lost -0.053 to close at 2.414, well below last week's high at 2.499. Worse than expected consumer confidence reading was seen as a factor. Conference board consumer confidence dropped to 122.1 in December versus consensus of 128.2. Year end reposition was seen as another factor in the movements in bonds. Following the Black Monday market crash in 1987 the NYSE imposed trading curbs to reduce market volatility and massive panic sell offs. NASDAQ
The Nasdaq was established in 1971. It was the World's 1st electronic stock market and now lists more than 4000 companies. Initially it solely performed as a quotation system but evolved into being able to perform electronic trades. Now the majority of trading is done via the OTC (over the counter ) system of trading.
Up until 1987 most of the trading was done over the phone but the SOES system (Small Order Execution System) was set up to remedy problems that came to light after the October 1987 Stock market crash. SOES provides an electronic method for Dealers to execute their trades, and in fact NASDAQ now requires Market Makers to honour trades made using the SOES system.
In 2006 the status of NASDAQ changes from a stock market to a licensed national securities exchange.
