User Guide Power Grid Bot (Version 5.0)

 

Recommendations:

  • EA Settings: Use Default Settings (click on Reset in Inputs Tab)
  • Symbol: Use recommended pair/pairs only
  • Time Frame: M15
  • Brokers: ECN brokers and non- ECN Brokers, low spreads and commissions (trading costs), recommended leverage must be available, FIFO or non-FIFO, micro lot account (0.01 lots)
  • Minimum Deposit: $2000 USD.

 

Live Trading Instructions:

  • Drag and drop Power Grid Bot onto the M15 Chart of the recommended pair.
  • In the EA menu, set your brokers GMT Offset value for Winter in the inputs tab (set to 2 by default, which is correct for most brokers)
  • Leave all other EA settings as default.
  • In the EA menu, under the "Common" tab, click on "Allow live trading" (must be ticked)
  • On your MT4 terminal (at the top), make sure that the "AutoTrading" button is enabled (when disabled=red, when enabled=green)
  • You should now see a smiley face on the top right corner of the chart

Backtesting with the standard MT4 Strategy Tester

  •      In your MT4 terminal click on "Tools" in the Menu bar
  •      Then click on History Center
  •      Under Symbol select GBPUSD and double click on M1
  •      When M1 is selected, click on "download"
  •      Now the time of the downloaded history data will be calculated according to your broker account time zone (you can ask your broker about the GMT Offset)
  •      When the download is complete , you can close the window
  •      Click on "Expert Properties" and click on the "Inputs" tab
  •      Set the value of "GMT offset (Wintertime)" to your account timezone/GMT offset. Set US DST to "false"
  •      Under Expert Properties in the MT4 strategy tester: Testing tab, set "Initial Deposit" to $2000 USD (minimum recommended deposit)
  •      Close and restart your MT4 Terminal
  •      Select recommended Symbol (GBPUSD) in the MT4 Strategy Tester
  •      Select Period M15
  •      Select Model: "Every Tick"
  •      Select Spread "15"
  •      Make sure you selected Power Grid Bot as Expert Advisor to test
  •      Click on "Use Date" and select from 2003.05.05 to today (equivalent time period to Dukascopy Real Tickdata)
  •      Click Start to backtest

 

    Backtesting with Birt's Tick Data Suite (most exact way to backtest)

     

    • If you don't have Birt's Tickdata Suite -> There is a free Trial Version available
    • Download the Tick Data of recommended pair (Tickdata Manager)
    • Open you MT4 Terminial
    • Select recommended Symbol
    • Select Period M15
    • Select Model: "Every Tick"
    • Click on "use tick data" in the strategy tester
    • Click on Tick data settings
    • Under the "Basic" tab, enable "Use variable spread".
    • Under the "Basic" tab, set GMT Offset to "+2" (default).
    • Under the "Basic" tab, set DST to "US" (default).
    • Under the "Advanced" tab, enable "Leverage" and set to the recommended value
    • Click OK
    • Under Expert Properties in the MT4 strategy tester: Testing tab, set "Initial Deposit" to $2000 USD (minimum recommended deposit)
    • Use default EA settings (click on Reset in the Inputs Tab)
    • Make sure GMToffset is set to 2
    • Start the backtest

    How to boost your performance...

     

    Start off with all settings as default.

    You can now change one value:  Initial Lotsize Grid Cycle.

    Most trades are very accurate and close in a short time with a small gain. To take advantage of that and boost the performance, you can trade that first trade with a higher lotsize (0.02 or even 0.03 instead of the default 0.01).

    However you are increasing  your risk by doing so. But it might be interesting for some of you, if you are willing to take the risk.

    Version 5.1 is out with reduced drawdown and input added - Grid Distance. By default it is set to 20 pips. But since the grid orders are placed dynamically this value is a minimum distance and the grid order can also by placed more pips away from the last trade. This can happen during high volatility, mostly triggered by news events. I recommend to leave this value as default.

    Important Notice For Live Trading


    In the backtests, no news events or election market impacts etc. were filtered out. The EA however doesn't trade between Christmas and New Years due to few market participants and low liquidity and often high volatility with choppy markets. This is enabled when December Filter is set to true (recommended).

    In general: PGB trades in the direction of the dominant trend. So it might be a good idea to turn off the EA before potentially market changing events like important elections (US, Europe including Britain). Keep in mind though the EA is very good at getting out of a trade gone bad with profit because of its dynamic grid algorithm, which is why no newsfilter is needed (this is for "normal" newsevents - even high impact ones). So no need to be overly cautious or staying glued to the screen. 


    How to stop EA trading before a big potentially dangerous event:

    1. Disable "AutoTrading" on your MT4 platform
    2. Then manually close all opened trades (if there are any)

    How to resume EA trading after the event:

    1. After the event, enable "AutoTrading" again to resume trading


    This is however at your own discretion. You most likely be fine if you just let the EA run through these events, which is indicated by the backtests.

    Coming up are the US Midterm Elections on Novemeber 6th..


    This is a situation where you have to decide to turn off the EA or let it run and do its job.

    I decided to let the EA run, since I believe it can handle the volatility. But I admit it is a risk to do so.


    If price takes off without a retracement, I will have to close the positions manually with a loss at some point. On the other hand there is big profit potential!

    Backtesting


    For backtesting I recommend to use only Real Tickdata (for example backtest with Birts Tickdata Suite, uses Dukascopy as source by default).

    It is the closest thing to reality you can get, but even that is not 100% accurate. I have also listed a way in this comment section to backtest using history you can download from your

    broker. However this data can vary from broker to broker and is not very reliable. It can only give you an idea of how the ea works in general.

    If you still choose to do it this way, i recommend to set the parameter "Initial Lotsize Grid Cycle" to 0.01.

    Keep in mind though that testing without real Tickdata (using fixed spread of 15 points) will also give you wrong trades in your backtest! Trades that would normally be filtered out by the Spread Filter. It can only be active when using variable spread (which you can tick in Birts Tickdata Suite).
    Also make sure the GMT offset of Tickdata Suite and the EA match, as well as DST (GMT offset is +2 with US DST by default for both).

    If you experience too little trades in live trading, set "Maximum Spread in points" to 20 or 30.
