Check out the new article: Self-Optimizing Expert Advisors in MQL5 (Part 20): Causality Regularization With Time-Lagged Independent Components Analysis (3).

The article presents a piecewise workflow that forecasts growth in ICA components as surrogate targets and then reconstructs smoothed returns from these forecasts. We analyze dominant-component effects and apply Shapley Additive Explanations to assess feature importance. The approach is implemented end to end, from data preparation to ONNX export and MQL5 integration, providing a practical pipeline for noise reduction and model interpretability.

This article addresses the problems faced by practitioners attempting to suppress noise in financial market data while preserving useful information to empower their trading decisions. Distinguishing market noise from a true signal is a materially challenging task; failing to address this problem meaningfully can result in unreliable trading strategies that lose investors' capital and confidence.

Our current time-lagged ICA solution learns to approximate the independent component manifold from financial market data and uses these approximations to forecast a manually defined surrogate target. Below, we shall outline two potential blind spots associated with our current solution:

In concrete terms, we will show that the ICA algorithm can be seen as a valuable coordinate transformation that allows us to forecast in a possibly richer, low-dimensional space that may have less noise than the direct approach of forecasting returns immediately from the approximate ICA manifold. This layered piecewise approach has practical benefits for algorithmic traders:
