Basic doubt about EA and auto trading, need help pls

Hi guys,

I am very new to this mql5 site. Actually I heard that Expert Advisors can do automatic trading. Is it really working like that? 

I am a total beginner and I want to know how this EA thing works practically. Can someone please guide me from where I should start? Also, is there any simple free EA to test in demo account just to understand the process? 

Please help me out. Thanks guys.
